Sennebogen 653e - Hybrid drive system for emission-free and flexible operation

Hybrid Drive Sennebogen 653 for Van den Heuvel Werkendam

SDK Engineering provided Van den Heuvel Werkendam with the complete engineering and integration of a hybrid drivetrain for a Sennebogen 653. The machine combines an electric drive with an integrated range extender, enabling zero-emission operation without compromising on deployability. The project included the development of the high-voltage system, electrical installation, system integration, and commissioning.

The Project

SDK Engineering handled the engineering, delivery, and integration of a complete hybrid drivetrain for a Sennebogen 653 for Van den Heuvel Werkendam. This project was developed in collaboration with our project partner and represents a future-proof solution for heavy equipment, where sustainability, performance, and maximum deployability come together.

By combining an electric drive with an integrated range extender, the Sennebogen 653 can operate fully emission-free when possible, while remaining operational at locations without grid connection or charging facilities. This significantly increases the machine’s flexibility without compromising on power or reliability.

The Challenge

Machines in the construction, infrastructure, and transshipment sectors often need to operate for extended periods at varying locations. Not every worksite has sufficient electrical infrastructure to allow for fully electric operation. The challenge, therefore, was to convert the Sennebogen 653 into a hybrid installation that enables zero-emission operation while maintaining operational deployability.

Our Solution

SDK Engineering developed and integrated a complete hybrid drivetrain in which electric drive, high voltage, energy management, and machine control work together seamlessly.

The hybrid configuration allows the machine to operate fully electrically, while the integrated range extender provides additional operating hours when charging is not immediately possible. Thanks to smart system integration, performance, safety, and efficiency are ensured under various working conditions.

SDK Engineering Activities

  • Engineering of the hybrid drivetrain
  • Design of the high-voltage system
  • Delivery of the hybrid drive system
  • Integration of electrical components
  • Electrical installation
  • Machine integration
  • Testing and validation of the complete system
  • Commissioning

Result

With the hybrid drive, the Sennebogen 653 has a sustainable and flexible power supply suitable for a wide range of applications in the construction, infrastructure, and transshipment sectors. The machine can operate emission-free when conditions allow and, thanks to the integrated range extender, easily switches to a greater operating range when needed.

This project demonstrates how SDK Engineering develops complete hybrid drive systems for heavy equipment, where electrification, high-voltage systems, energy management, and machine integration come together in one reliable total solution.
